Questions for ELECTRICIANS about lighting…?
What’s the difference between natural light light bulbs and full spectrum light bulbs? Which kind is right for me? Please explain.
My office is finally giving me my own office, however, I hate the fluorescent lights that are in there now. I do graphic design and those lights give me a headache. I deal with a lot of detailed images and color correcting. There’s no chance of adding a window.
Currently I’m in a cubicle next to big windows so I have a lot of natural lighting. What type of light bulb should I buy to reduce the possibility of headaches? Someone also told me a parabolic lens might help. Do I need that in conjunction with different light bulbs?
Currently the light bulb in the ceiling are CRI F32T8/850/XP, 32 watts.
The difference between natural lighting and full-spectrum lighting is the color temperature of the lamp (bulb). I have a table published by Osram Sylvania that describes each color temperature. Natural white occurs at 3600K (Kelvin) with a CRI (color rendering index) of 86. Daylight full spectrum occurs at 5000K with a CRI of 90. The lamp you listed has an “850″ designation. This has a temperature of 5000K, but only has a CRI of 85. Essentially, the higher the CRI, the better the lamp. However, be prepared to pay a lot of money for a full-spectrum lamp. They are high end and are not cheap.
With regard to fluorescent lighting, headaches are almost always associated with glare, not with the fact that the light source is fluorescent. Look around your workspace and see if you can identify any sources of glare, either from the window or from the light fixtures. Look at your computer screen and see if you can see a reflection of lights or any other image, like the window, off the monitor. When you are exposed to this kind of glare for a sustained period, headaches and dizziness frequently result. Expecially from the computer monitor, your eyes will constantly try to focus on the image from the glare while simultaneously focusing on the content on the monitor. You should situate your monitor such that no glare or other image is visible on the screen.
Parabolic fixtures may help, but they are not true computer room lights. You may still get a glarey lamp image off of the side of the parabolic louver. Holophane makes a lens that can replace your existing lens, and is much cheaper and more effective than parabolics.

I had this in my office and it worked great. I would start with the lens and then upgrade the lamps if you feel that is necessary.
