How do I get my new graphics card to show my desktop?

I just recently bought a new Radeon 9250 PCI graphics card for my computer (Windows XP). I installed it into my computer, then installed it on my computer. After that, I transferred the cord that leads from the monitor to the graphics card from my old graphics card, to my new graphics card. I looked at my monitor, but all it showed was the background of my desktop and the mouse. I also noticed that when windows was starting up, the screen would be black. Would someone please help?

Restart your computer and listen to the bleeps your computer makes. If it makes the same noises as before then your card is working, if your computer makes long bleeps or short depending on the motherboard you have, it indicates a hardware failure.
Say it’s fine, the monitor will work on default but you won’t have all it’s power, you need to install the driver to allow your computer to work with the new card. You can obtain these from the internet for free or the disk your card came with.
Once you have installed everything to check it works go into “run” and type “dxdiag” (as long as you have direct X installed from a game) and it will show what card you are running under display TAB or go into device manager:
right click My computer
Click properties
TAB device manager
display adaptors
– will display your card you are using and state if it is running properly.
