Shopping Cart Graphic
I have a question for all of you web designers. How do you create your websites and what language is a MUST?
I am a graphic designer and wanted to merge into web design. I know XHTML and CSS and know how to tranfer photoshop designs into dreamweaver as well. I also know a little bit of flash. I have recently heard that many people are using wordpress to create website, I did try to go thru there and its a little overwhelming there are so many tutorials and so many different methods of doing things its just to much. Then there is php….really… more code is that necessary?? I just got lost! I can build a functioning site without php but do you really need to learn to get it to the next level? I wanted a easier way to integrate ecommerce so I wanted to add a shopping cart and pay pal but it uses php, right? So do I have to stick to informational sites. I wish I could have continued school! argh
First of all, if you are a good graphic designer, you should stay in that field and not bother with coding: In 45 years of programming in all languages, I have NEVER met a “one-guy” who was excellent at BOTH coding AND Graphics! Why? Because one is an artist (left brained), while the other is a logical person (right brained). You CAN’T have both!
This being said, if you want coding:
(X)HTML, of course, CSS and Javascript are the basics for any system.
Then:
On Unix based systems (LAMP servers) (biggest share of the server’s market, and free)
Php, mysql, AJAX framework
On Window based systems: (Microsoft, expensive, buggy)
ASP, ASP.net, MSSQL, AJAX framework.
WordPress? Ruby? Dreamweaver? NONE of them: they generate crappy and unmaintainable code, they need a long time to learn (longuer than learning all the basic languages!)
Use Notepad++ and that’s ALL you need.
Oh! A shopping cart? A PayPal?
